Garmin Forerunner 310XT Features

The Forerunner 310XT is jam-packed full of features to enhance the training of even the most dedicated of triathlete. The 310XT is water resistant down to 50m and unlike the vast majority of GPS enabled sports watches, can actually track your average speed and distance travelled while in the open water. You won’t be able to get an exact reading on your current speed or distance, but the watch will be able to give you an accurate estimation of your distance and average speed after you’ve finished your swim.

The FR310XT has an optional heart rate monitor that can track your average and maximum heart rate, as well as allow you to setup heart rate zones for training, with audible and visual alarms alerting you if you fall outside your desired heart rate zone. The watch will also be able to perform an advanced calorie consumption calculation for you based on your heart rate data throughout your workout. Additionally, you’ll be able to store your heart rate data online with the Garmin Connect online training system after your workout for additional post-workout training analysis.

You’ll be able to track various vital body statistics with your Forerunner 310XT, such as your weight, body fat, body water, and six other additional measurements. Your precise training path will be recorded with the built in GPS, allowing for the recording and storage of your distance, pace, speed, average speed, and power data. This data can then be uploaded to the Garmin Connect online training system so you can view your workout on an overlay of a map, with graphs showing vital information at key points of the workout.

The ability to record laps is built into the Forerunner 310XT so you’re able to setup training laps then record vital information about each lap such as the time, average speed, average pace and with the optional heart rate monitor, your average heart rate for each lap. This information can also be uploaded for post-workout analysis to Garmin Connect, making it useful for long-term workout analysis to compare how you performed on each lap compared with identical laps from previous workouts.

You can also get the optional bike speed/cadence sensor to get more accurate readings when on the bike, although the GPS unit will still display your speed, so you only need the speed/cadence sensor if you want to know your cadence, or you’re planning on cycling indoors. There’s also an optional foot pod if you plan to do a lot of running indoors where the GPS won’t be able to give you any speed/distance data.

Using the Garmin Forerunner 310XT

The Forerunner 310XT is a large watch, but it’s still very comfortable, with a soft strap and a large clear display that shows you 3 separate pieces of data at once. It’s easy to configure the watch and switch between displays during your training sessions. With its 20 hours of battery life it lasts long enough for any workout and one of the things I love about the FR310XT is that it’s really easy to transfer it from your wrist to the bike when you transition to the bike during a triathlon.
